A new OS for my laptop? (and possibly other ramblings)

Well, in trying to install ChromiumOS to my Lenovo IdeaPad U400 (which I found thankfully fully works, when I dropped it, the only damage it took was cosmetic, but the disk drive is unusable, I wasn’t using that anyway) I found a somewhat older (but still active) Linux distro called JoliOS which uses the JoliCloud service, and I’m typing this post from JoliOS with the WordPress plugin. will it make it easier to keep this blog updated? possibly. is it a nice OS? very much so, but it does have the disadvantages of being based on an Ubuntu release from 2 years ago (that’s 4 releases right there, it’s based on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat) and as such I had to figure out why it wasn’t detecting my wifi card, the cause was the kernel being too old, and the drivers not being there, so I had to grab the 3.5 kernel and the iwlwifi drivers, after that, all worked well!

Now, I’ve gotten myself a desktop, a pretty nice one, a CyberPowerPC Gamer Ultra which I swapped out the RAM on (it now sports 8GB of Corsair Vengeance) and added a wifi chip. that’s my main gaming rig, and as such it runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit as some of my games refuse to run on Linux, even with recent advances in that area. but gaming doesn’t take near as much of my time as it does for some people. I’d rather balance that with other things than game 100% of the time, as if I did devote that much time, I’d get bored. plain and simple. what I COULD do for hours on end is stare at computer code and find errors in it, as that’s just a big puzzle to me. Gotta love when working with computer code is like working with a puzzle to yourself.

anyway, enough rambling from me.

A bit on me living with Aspergers and a couple other things

First off, I don’t condone shooting a school full of children, hell, I don’t condone hitting people.

But what the news anchors have been suggesting is just cruel and wrong. I myself have Aspergers Syndrome (Soon to be part of the ASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder), and many people are suggesting people with Aspergers are killers, and that they will kill one day. To that, I would quite literally reply “Are you fucking kidding me, seriously, are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?”.

Here’s some facts for all you who think people with Aspergers are all killers:

  1. People with Aspergers are actually more likely to be shot than shoot another person
  2. Neurotypical (so-called “Normal”) people ALSO have the ability to be a killer.
  3. a lot of people with Apergers feel remorse after hurting somebody

My personal experience is that when I was younger, I’d go into a rage, and I’d lash out at anyone and everyone, but shortly thereafter, I’d feel immediate a profound regret and remorse to the point all I could do is cry. and that happened nearly every day, did I kill anyone? no. Do I have the guts to? Hell no, most neurotypical people wouldn’t even have the guts to.

Every time I would go into a rage, it’s not a planned-out anger in any sense of the term, no, all thought would be replaced with a angry emptiness in my mind. there would quite literally be minimum to no thought that I would know of, hell, a lot of the stuff I’d do I wouldn’t even have much recollection of. but I WOULD know if I hurt someone, inadvertently or not.

How the news anchors and a mojority of the population is suggesting that those with Aspergers and ASD should be put on a registry is wrong, and will hurt more people than it helps, a majority of the earth’s population has, will have, or has had at one point in time a mental disorder or were mentally unhealthy. and what they are suggesting is just the same as saying all Neurotypical people are killers and should be put on a registry, it is this kind of stereotyping that hurts everyone.

Most Autistic people and Aspies tend to be good people, and we stick to ourselves because  socialization isn’t easy for anyone with Autism or Aspergers, hell, there are even non-verbal people with Autism.

All I can say at this point is that the suggestion news anchors and people are throwing out there are fucking ludicrous, and if they’d spend a bit more time reading up on what the disorders actually involve and how they affect people, they would most certainly have NOT made any of these suggestions.

Again, I don’t condone any type of violence unless it’s in self-defense, and what the shooter did in Connecticut was not just wrong, but evil and cruel, but these suggestions that the news anchors and a mojority of the world hit closer to home than anything ever has for me.

Ubuntu For Android Announced

Ubuntu for Android is one thing I’d DEFINITELY try if it was made available for those with Android tablets, it looks slick. but enough of me just putting my opinion on it, it’s better to have facts backing it up. and there’s not many of those this early on.

From what I gather from the video and the site for it, it will be compatible with both PC versions of Ubuntu (Desktop and Laptop) and Ubuntu TV which was announced earlier this month. The device it is to be run on needs to have multiple processor cores, and can seamlessly share data with Ubuntu PCs and Ubuntu TVs. The hardware specs are kind of high, needing a dual-core 1GHz CPU, a USB Host Mode, 2GB storage, Video Acceleration with shared kernel driver for OpenGL or ES/EGL, 512 MB RAM, and HDMI Video Out with a secondary frame buffer device, which are not low end requirements by any means, Did I mention that it requires Android version 2.3 or higher? My Acer Iconia Tab A100 might possibly be able to run this, can’t say for sure, as I haven’t looked at my RAM or CPU.

Either way, this might just be one thing that gets me to keep Unity, as it makes it so Unity make a bit more sense.

News and a slight explanation to absence

First off: the reason I have been inactive is because I have been busy, I have a life away from the keyboard too, you know.

Now for some news:

  • Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 has recently been released and I intend to do a (text and picture only) review and give my thoughts on it. I know, I said I would get Videos of this, but my Laptop  being the only PC I have that has enough RAM to do more than at the most Firefox and the XFCE Music Browser while running XFCE, won’t encode the screencasts right, and I’m looking for a better software to do the actual screencasts, and I’m looking for another video hosting site, as Youtube seems to be nothing but trolls.
  • I am looking into getting permission to put a copy of the Ubuntu Developer News (which I help with) and if I get permission, I may get one more thing that I can use to keep me going on this blog.
  • Ubuntu Global Jams are in the works of being planned out around the world. click here for the original announcement, click here for info about Global Jams from the Ubuntu Wiki, and click here to see if there is one near you (of course, if you are part of a LoCo Team, you might already know most of this)
  • Ubuntu 12.04 is open for testing: the next release of Ubuntu (codenamed Precise Pangolin) is the next LTS (Long Term Support) release, and as such, those who want to contribute to Ubuntu and are not afraid to use alpha quality releases are encouraged to download the current daily build, and install it on your PC, but bear in mind that there are many bugs that still need fixing, and tat is why there is a need for testers.

I will be getting my Notebook PC back from having it repaired this coming week, and I will install Ubuntu 12.04 on it and write a review up soon after. I may do a video around that time and might end up using Youtube despite the trolls if I can find a good screencasting program.
